What is Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer is a 2023 biographical thriller written and directed by Christopher Nolan. It is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who led the Manhattan Project and oversaw the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II. It grossed over 952 million dollars worldwide, making it the highest-grossing biographical film in history, and won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture.

The Story

The film moves across two timelines.

The first follows Oppenheimer from his academic years in Europe through his appointment as scientific director of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, New Mexico. This timeline builds toward the Trinity test, the first successful detonation of a nuclear device, and the moment Oppenheimer understood exactly what he had created.

The second timeline depicts a 1954 security hearing in which Oppenheimer’s loyalty to the United States is called into question. His past associations, his relationships, and his public opposition to the hydrogen bomb are used against him. The hearing strips him of his security clearance and ends his influence in American science and politics.

“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” Oppenheimer recalled these words from the Bhagavad Gita in the moments after the Trinity test. Nolan builds the entire film around what it means to carry that weight.

The Trinity Test

Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema filmed the Trinity nuclear test sequence without computer-generated imagery. They used practical pyrotechnics, miniatures, and custom photographic techniques to recreate the explosion on camera. It is one of the most technically ambitious practical sequences in modern filmmaking and it shows. The explosion feels real because it largely was.

The Verdict

Oppenheimer is the kind of film that makes you sit quietly for a few minutes after it ends. It is not comfortable viewing. It asks difficult questions about science, responsibility, and what governments do to people who become inconvenient. Nolan has made technically impressive films before but this is his most mature work. See it.
