Arjun Reddy is a 2017 Telugu romantic drama written and directed by Sandeep Vanga. It stars Vijay Deverakonda as Arjun Reddy, a brilliant and deeply self-destructive medical student who falls apart after being separated from the woman he loves. The film was made on a budget of around 8 crore rupees and grossed over 50 crore worldwide, making it one of the most profitable Telugu films of its year. It turned Vijay Deverakonda from a supporting actor into one of Telugu cinema’s biggest stars almost overnight.

The Story

Arjun Reddy is the topper of his medical college and one of the most talented people in every room he walks into. He is also volatile, possessive, and completely unable to manage the space between what he feels and what he does. When he meets Preethi, a junior at his college, he falls hard. She falls for him too. They build something real.

Then her family intervenes and forces her into a marriage with someone else. Arjun does not move on. He drinks, uses drugs, stops functioning, and slowly loses everything he built in his life. The film follows that descent without softening any of it.

Vanga does not make Arjun easy to watch. That is the point. The film asks you to sit with a man who is genuinely difficult and find the grief underneath the behaviour.

Why It Hit the Way It Did

Telugu cinema in 2017 had very few films that looked like Arjun Reddy. No songs picturised on foreign locations, no comic sidekick track, no clean resolution that fixed everything. The film was raw and long and uncomfortable and it connected with young audiences in a way that more conventional productions had stopped doing. People recognised something true in it even while disagreeing with almost every choice the main character made.

Vijay Deverakonda

This was the performance that changed his career. Arjun Reddy is on screen for almost the entire 187 minute runtime and Deverakonda carries it without the film feeling exhausting. He plays the anger and the vulnerability in the same breath and you believe both. It is the kind of performance that defines what an actor is capable of and everything he has done since has been measured against it.

One Thing to Know

Arjun Reddy is a genuinely divisive film. Many people love it. Many people have serious problems with how it portrays its protagonist and his treatment of the people around him. Both responses are valid. The film does not ask you to approve of Arjun. It asks you to understand him, which is a different thing. Go in knowing the conversation around it and you will get more out of it.
